i just found this photo. he was beautiful with his tatoos. sadly he died in1996. he had been a diabetic since a young boy, and he drank heavily as an adult; this is never a good mix. i am not sure why he fascinates me, but he does. i would have liked to meet him. RIP Micheal.
Michael was the first person I met when I moved to NYC in 1992, and the last person I saw when he took me to the airport for my move to Seattle in 1995.
He phoned me a few days before he died and told me that he was ready to move to Seattle with me, something I had been asking him to do all year. He told me he was depressed and his health was failing him badly.
I have never felt more unconditionally loved by anyone. When we walked anywhere he held my hand, and he always walked on the street side of the sidewalk. When I asked him why he said it was safer for me.
I choose to believe that he intentionally didn’t take his insulin that day, he needed it 2-3 times a day and was very aware about it. If it wasn’t his choice, then it was just a horrible waste of the biggest heart I have ever known, before or since.
I miss him every day.
